Solus Playground
The students will build their knowledge of the importance of being active every day. Students will click on five different squares to view five different activities they can participate in on a daily basis. Students will discover activities they can participate while playing on the playground with Chef Solus. The students will learn how to hopscotch, perform a cartwheel, how to stretch, how to wheel barrel with a partner, and how to jump rope.
Keyboard commands for nutrition game:
Mouse: To view each student participating in their activity (hopscotch, cartwheel, stretching, wheel barrel, and jump roping), you will have to put the mouse on a specific box (student activity) on the tope of the window and double click to view the student’s activity. Then, the window will become larger and you will need to use the cursor and double click to make the student move in their specific activity. Some student’s activities will need to be clicked every time to view their activity.
Materials Needed for Game
A high-speed Internet connection is recommended. Computer and Internet access, the latest Flash players installed,
download free from Adobe.
Teaching Tips
Take a quick survey about who is active everyday by the raise of hands. Then, discuss what types of activities they do every day to be active (take 5 responses).
For the older students, you may want to give them a pencil and paper and have them count how many times the characters hopscotch, cartwheel, stretch (count the seconds), wheel barrel (count the seconds), and jump rope (how many times they jump) across the screen. This will allow them to use their basic math skills to add up the tally marks they have kept during the activity.
Procedures
1. Students will discuss the activities they participate in on daily basis through raising their hand and discussing the activity as a group.
2. Students will continue to work on the printable worksheet “What is Being Active” from Nourish Interactive website. This will allow all students to categorize what “being active” means or looks like and what “not being active” means or looks like.
Assessments
After “
Solus Playground”, students will pick two activities they viewed online and go outside and perform that activity for at least 5 minutes. The students will be directed to pick another activity they viewed and perform that activity for at least 5 minutes.
The older students can pick a third activity they viewed and perform that activity for at least 5 minutes. You will be able to observe the students understanding from the “
Solus Playground” if they can perform at least two activities maybe three activities depending on the age group. This will allow the student to have inquiry during your assessment.
For younger students, allow them to do the same assessment, but with a partner. Your younger students will need more support during this portion. This will allow your student to develop more confidence in their abilities.
