Food Pyramid Puzzles Lesson Plan

The Pyramid Puzzle Game:
This is an online jigsaw puzzle with 16 puzzle choices.
  • 11 of the puzzles promote the food groups and provide a healthy message about that food group.
  • 5 of the puzzles are fun character based puzzles.
Using their mouse, the child puts the puzzle together. When pieces that belong together are placed very close in proximity, the pieces will automatically snap together.
Puzzles range in difficulty from based on the number of puzzle pieces. The child can choose between 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, and 144 pieces.

Teaching Tips:
Have the student review the Interactive Food Pyramid or My Plate.
  1. Have the students come up with different food choices that fit into each of the different groups.
  2. Discuss why it is important to have a balance of all of the food groups in one’s diet and that eating a balanced diet can be delicious and fun, too!
  3. Guide the students to Pyramid Puzzles and the appropriate number of puzzle pieces.
  4. Have them select a puzzle based on a color of the food group and build the puzzle to reinforce the conversation by seeing food group colors and discovering the hidden nutrition message.


Grades 1 – 2:
List different foods and have the students determine what in food group they belong either orally or as a quiz depending on the grade level.
