New study shows nagging parents works

Posted on Sep 12, 2011 by Maggie LaBarbera

New study shows that nagging parents does work.  This is probably not a surprise for anyone that has kids!  Sometimes it is just easier to give in, especially with hectic schedules.

But I found this very interesting:

  • John Hopkins School of Public Health have found that children are who are knew highly commercialized characters like SpongeBob or Disney Princesses are more likely to nag their parents – and nag for junk food.
  • Mothers in the study cited packaging, characters, and commercials as the three main forces compelling their children to nag.
  • Dina Borzekowski, the study’s lead author, concludes, "To address childhood obesity, it may be necessary to limit the amount of food and beverage advertising shown on commercial television and other media, as this may lessen children’s nagging for unhealthy items.”
One of the problems with these characters is that they are licensed out to represent junk food as FUN and kids want to mimic the characters that they love.  It is too bad that we don't have at least the same emphasis on healthy foods.  Just imagine if these characters did not promote unhealthy foods but only healthy foods!  Would that help kids become more interested in trying them?

What do you think?

Please help us get the word out about healthy nutrition games with NO advertisements!  Our characters only promote one message:  healthy foods are tasty and F-U-N!
