What foods make a healthy breakfast for kids

Posted on Mar 11, 2011 by Maggie LaBarbera

A healthy breakfast has at least 3 foods from the food groups.

  • fresh fruit is always the best but a small glass of 100% fruit juice counts as one serving
  • vegetables are a solid part of any healthy meal and that includes breakfast!  Try adding some veggies into an omelet or even as a sliced finger food.  Have you tried some carrot juice?  it is really tasty and actually sweet!  You can include them in a blended smoothie.
  • calcium and vitamin D for bones - usually milk is the best source but make sure you go low fat with a goal of 1% or skim milk.
  • A healthy protein is important - that means egg, lean small piece of meat or even a handful of nuts in their cereal.
  • Try to avoid the sugary cereals or at least make them the once in a while breakfast
Quick tip:

You can be creative based on your child's likes and dislikes,  honestly, it does not need to be the "traditional breakfast" .  It is much more important to make it a balanced breakfast with healthy foods that your child will enjoy
