Texting a food diary makes sense whatever works, that is key!

Posted on Dec 10, 2008 by Maggie LaBarbera

I was trying to avoid discussing this but since I keep seeing excerpts on this study, I feel remiss not mentioning it. A study done by University of North Carolina showed that kids aged 5 to 13 (I know, isn't 5 a little young??) are almost twice as likely to keep a daily food diary journal if they can text it.

Food diaries help with compliance to a diet regime. Well it makes sense really. Kids are most likely to use tools that they are familiar with and fit into their everyday lifestyle. (just like us adults) So we know how kids can text each other and they have their own shorthand code too! so it makes sense.

It goes with my philosophy and the reason for this website:

"kids need to be engaged in a way that is meaningful to them!"

Texting for food diaries and exercise tracking or online! ( a good idea, I need to look into this) and learning about nutrition and the importance of healthy living, exercise through interactive games.

We have some fun printable food diaries and healthy habits goal tracking sheets for those families who don't want to pay for the added texting costs. Our sheets are free to use as often as you like with daily tracking sheets and weekly tracking sheets. Different versions are available in our teachers section as well! Sometimes awareness is the most powerful nutrition education.

This is agreat point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith.
