Falafel Spiders

These Falafel Spiders are so tasty and fun to construct, kids won’t wonder why these spooky “treats” aren’t sweet, but savory. The whole family can shape the fava bean falafel balls with their hands and transform them into spiders with the help of a little bell pepper, hummus and a few black olives.

  • 1/2 cup dried chickpeas
  • 1/2 cup frozen, skinned fava beans, thawed
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, peeled
  • 1/4 cup loosely packed chopped cilantro
  • 1/4 cup loosely packed chopped parsley
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons crumbled stale bread
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder or cayenne pepper (Optional)
  • canola oil, for frying
  • 1 small red bell pepper
  • 2 medium green bell peppers
  • 4 black olives
  • 1 teaspoon hummus

Together: Place the chickpeas in a medium bowl and fill with water. Soak the chickpeas for 8-10 hours, or overnight. Drain the chickpeas well and place them on a bed of paper towels. Add the thawed fava beans to the towel with the chickpeas and pat dry with a few more paper towels.
Adults: Place the chickpeas and fava beans into a food processor. Add the onion, garlic, cilantro, parsley, cumin, coriander, baking powder, bread, salt and chili powder, if using. Pulse until it forms coarse dough.
Kids: Divide the dough into 8 equal parts. Form each part into a ball and flatten each ball slightly.
Adults: Cut the red bell pepper in half and remove the inner white membrane. Carve out a shape which resembles a small mouth. Repeat until you have 8 mouths. Cut each green bell pepper into 8 long strips, cut the strips in half. These are the spider’s legs. Cut each olive in half lengthwise. Cut each half into 3 semi-circles. These are the Falafel Spider’s eyes.
Together: Place the falafel balls on a serving platter. Take the green bell pepper strips and insert 4 into each falafel ball to serve as the spider’s legs. Using a toothpick, place a small drop of hummus where the spider’s mouth and eyes would be. Use the hummus as an edible adhesive to attach eyes and mouths from the olives and red bell pepper to each Falafel Spider. Enjoy!
