National summer meals program for kids resumes for a second year

Posted on Jun 11, 2012 by Maggie LaBarbera

Today Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that they would again celebrate the Summer Food Service Program Week.  Last year was the first year that they introduced this with a goal of promoting access of healthy meals during the summer months when school lunch and breakfast programs are closed.

The USDA has partnered with numerous organizations throughout the country to provide nutritious meals for kids who might otherwise go without a lunch.

During the school year, over 21 million school kids get free or lower priced breakfasts and lunches.  The government has been working to improve the nutrition of those meals with new standards and initiatives.

It has been a bumpy road especially when pizza was declared a vegetable!  But we do want to recognize their efforts in the right direction to improve their meals.

Last summer, 2.3 million children were fed during summertime.  But still many parents may not be aware of this program.  Help spread the word so that children do not go hungry during summer.
