Dr Robert Murray is the director of the Center for Healthy Weight and Nutrition at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Ohio. In this article, he discusses five food fads that could put a pinch on your food budget.
Fads often pop up out of concerns about health issues, but sometimes just good old fashion good marketing! So before jumping on the bandwagon, just take a few minutes to determine what is the additional benefit you are expecting. It very well may be worth saving the extra money.
1. Fresh fruit versus buying frozen food: you might think that fresh fruit is more nutritional, but according to Dr Murray, the new preserving methods do a good job of preserving nutrients in fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables in any form provides many nutritional benefits.
Take advantage of store sales to stock up on fruits and vegetables.
2. Organic foods: Organic foods refers to the method used to grow or produce the foods. Eliminating antibiotics, pesticides and hormones from the process. But organic foods cost more and from a nutritional value are the same as nonorganic foods. So just take this into consideration and weigh the benefits versus costs.
3. Designer fruits and vegetables: Exotic fruits like acai berries and pomegranate are rich in antioxidant and vitamins but usually cost a great deal more. Dark, ruby skinned fruits like blueberries, plums and blackberries also offer a nutritional punch but are less expensive.
4. Fortified beverages: These drinks usually cost more but can also have a lot of calories. Some even as much as a can of soda. So beware and read the food label. Getting your nutrition by eating healthier foods is better for your wallet.
5. Prepackaged foods: the grab and go options are convenient but also expensive. For some families, this may be a good option. You can buy some food in bulk for a better price and then prepackage them yourself!
