World Health Day asks How Safe Is your Food?

Posted on Apr 13, 2015 by Maggie LaBarbera

Every year the world health organization (WHO) sponsors a day to promote the health of us all, no matter where you live on earth.

This year, the WHO is asking us "How safe is your food?"  Here is why they are bringing attention to food safety.  You might be surprised to know that:

  • an estimated 2 million people DIE every year from unsafe food related deaths
  • that includes children
  • Food containing harmful bacteria, virus, parasites or chemicals cause more than 200 diseases in humans.  These diseases can range from vomiting to cancers.

Here is the five keys that WHO is emphasizing as part of their food safety campaign:

  • Keep clean
  • Separate raw and cooked food
  • Cook food thoroughly
  • Keep food at safe temperatures
  • Use safe water and raw materials.

Don't let this be just another day. We need to practice food safety everyday.  This part of a healthy living plan for families, children and adults.

Nourish Thought for the Day:

Food safety requires each step in the farm to plate process to work together to keep food clean!
