National Gardening Month Spurs Child's Interest Healthy Foods

Posted on Apr 08, 2015 by Maggie LaBarbera

It is National Garden Month!

We just planted a lemon tree in our front yard.  It is about 12 inches high, so really just a baby.  My mom took a branch from her lemon tree that is very old and bears so much lemons, we never have to buy them.  She nurtured the branch until it began to grow roots and we have a special area in our front yard that has been waiting for the lemon tree.  We were excited to finally be able to plant it in the ground.

My neice helped us and now she is calling and asking how the plant is doing.  She wants to make sure we don't forget to water it.  How adorable!  Kids get really excited when they are actively involved in creating something and to see it come to life and grow before their eyes! Well needless to say, it will be awhile before we have lemons but she can't wait.  She wants to help pick the first one and make lemonade.

Gardening is such a special task that can really teach children:

  • to respect nature
  • to be responsible
  • to be caring
  • to enjoy what natural healthy food really is
  • to learn where food really comes from
  • to be excited about healthy foods
  • peak their curiosity about how to create meals out of the foods they grow

These are just a few things that I have seen gardening with my neice.  There are so many more benefits.  Happy Planting.

Nourish Thought for the Day:

Planting a little seed today could bear more than just food for kids!
