Boil
Pull off lower petals and cut off the stem.
Place into boiling, salted water.
Let simmer 25 to 40 minutes until petals near center pulls out easily. Invert to drain.
Steam
Place on rack over 1½ inches boiling water.
Cover and cook 25 to 40 minutes.
Microwaving:
(I am not big on microwaving vegetables - I much prefer to cook it on the stove, but for those of you that prefer it, I am including it)
Place in a glass bowl upside down
Cover with a glass top
Cook on high 6 to 7 minutes.
Test for doneness by piercing the bottom of the artichoke with a toothpick. It should feel like a baked potato. If you feel a hard spot, cook for another minutes and test again.
