Best family activities to burn off Christmas dinner

Posted on Dec 26, 2014 by Maggie LaBarbera

I hope everyone had a joyous and very merry Christmas.  Family time, food, gifts, singing and dancing, games are all part of a special holiday season.

I know I ate one too many Peruvian tamales.  So today I am focused on getting some extra workouts in.  It got me thinking to what are some of the best activities that families can do together to burn off those extra calories.

Here is what I found:

1.  rollerskating or inline skating:  great fun.  You can go to a local skating rink or if your weather permits, go to the local schoolyard.  many parks also have nicely paved walking tracks that you can skate on.  Even the little ones can rollerskate!

depending on your intensity, you can burn up to 425 calories in 30 minutes

2.  play tag: you won't realize how much exercise you get from short bursts of running.

depending on your intensity, you can burn up to 250 calories in 30 minutes

3.  Relay races: get the kids running with family races.  You can make them obstacle courses, uses sacks for jumping races or keep it simple and measure distance and time.

depending on your intensity, you can burn up to 374 calories in 30 minutes

4. jump rope:  you can jump rope individually or take turns jumping into a big jump rope turned by 2 people.  Kids may surprise you and want to double dutch jump!  Ask them to share some of their favorite jumping songs.

depending on your intensity, you can burn up to 340 calories in 30 minutes

5. hula hoop: put some music on and hula hoop.  You might be surprised, it is not as easy to keep it up as it looks!  Feeling adventurous, try 2 hula hoops at once.  See who can go the longest!

depending on your intensity, you can burn up to 300 calories in 30 minutes

6. tennis:  do you ever notice that tennis players are always thin.  The stop and go intensity helps to burn more calories.  You can play singles or doubles.  Fun for the whole family. Tennis anyone!

depending on your intensity, you can burn up to 272 calories in 30 minutes

7. dancing: dancing is great aerobics activity and everyone can join in.  Have the kids take turns putting on their favorite songs.  Show off those moves!

depending on your intensity, you can burn up to  221 calories in 30 minutes

8. family brisk walk: it is simple but good workout.  Talk while you walk, go to a nice hiking trail that allows for a safe brisk walk (paved is better) and enjoy fresh air.  There are also indoor walking tracks for areas that tend to be too cold to walk outside.  These can be a lot of family as you will join other families taking some time to enjoy a brisk walk.

depending on your intensity, you can burn up to 170 calories in 30 minutes

9. biking:  another great activity and fun for the whole family.  Even younger ones can use training wheels.  Find a paved trail that allows for bicycles.
If you ride about (10mph)  you can burn up to 150 calories in 30 minutes

Nourish Thought for the Day:

Active time as a family is great way to teach children the importance of daily exercise.
