Danish may have the secret to curing childhood obesity

Could one doctor have cracked the code for childhood obesity? One Danish doctor, Dr Holm has reported a pilot study that included 1900 children. According to his report, 70% of the children who lost weight, maintained their weight loss after four years.
He had 17 very specific rules that families had to follow. The rules are not just about portion control but really focus on family lifestyle.

Dish up portions in the kitchen - don't have pots and pans at the dining table

Plate proportions for dinner should be: half vegetables, a quarter brown rice, pasta or potatoes, and a quarter low fat fish or meat

Wait 20 minutes before having second helpings - this allows time for the body to feel full

Feel satisfied after each meal

Only two pieces of fruit per day - we assume it's suggested that the rest of the 5 a day come from vegetables

Fast food only once a month

Sweets only once a week

Snacks only once a week

Limit juice, iced tea, cocoa, soda or lemonade to once weekly - only half a litre in total

Cycle or walk to school

Organized physical activity eg dancing, handball or gymnastics

Free physical activities like walking/biking after school, walking the dog or trampolining

Screen time (television, computer or tablet) limited to two hours per day

No television/computer access until 5pm
