5 tips to recommit to healthy habits during the holidays

Posted on Nov 05, 2014 by Maggie LaBarbera

We have New Years Day where a great deal of people are making their New Years resolutions.  But by March most have fallen off and certainly by winter.

With the holidays just around the corner, November reminds us to recommit to our resolution to eat and be healthier.  What better time to make this resolution than before you go into the holidays.

This may or may not surprise you but the average person is destined to gain 5 lbs or more between Thanksgiving and New Years.*

So I ask you, does it make sense to throw it all out the window for a few weeks and put on that extra weight (which gets harder and harder to take off).  But more than that, you are teaching your children to do the same.

Now, I am not saying, don't enjoy some of the special favorite dishes that will be served during this special time, I am just wondering if focusing on healthy habits overall shouldn't be more of a focus during the season rather than waiting until after.

Nourish Thought for the Day:

You don't need a special holiday to make a healthy resolution.

Healthy habits you can teach your kids this holiday season:

  • balance the special high calorie dishes with healthy servings of vegetables and sides
  • pay attention to portions, teach children there is room for all your favorite foods in a healthy diet, just some you eat more of than others
  • focus on increasing activity as a family to burn off some of those extra calories
  • pick and choose what treats you are going to eat rather than eat all of them
  • teach children to eat a healthy breakfast and lunch so you are not starving during the holiday feasts
