Aournd the World with School Lunch Programs

Posted on Oct 15, 2014 by Maggie LaBarbera

With the celebration and awareness about school lunches, it got me wondering about what kids eat in other parts of the world for their school lunch?  I grew up in San Francisco mission district.  And we were fairly diverse population.  So I did learn early on about less American traditional lunches as kids brought lunches that were leftover dinners.  We often shared and tried different foods.

This is a quick example.  In Peru, we love our avocados.  My mom would occasionally make me avocado sandwich, which I loved.  One of best friends, Shirley, was Filipino.  She would bring avocado in a bowl with milk and sprinkled sugar.  I thought that was strange because we at our avocado with salt.  But I tried hers and she tried mine.  We were both surprised that it tasted good both ways!

Anyway, I think it is great for kids to get to try different foods from other cultures when possible.  We are becoming more "global" as they say.

I found this great infographic that took us around the world with school lunch programs. Enjoy!

Nourish Thought for the Day:

It is through our differences that we realize how similar we really are.
