Chef Solus and The Explorers Keep their Hearts Healthy

What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day then by taking care of our heart.

We begin by remembering what we have learned from our friends from the Food Pyramid. They have taught us a lot about keeping our heart healthy.

We all sat around the campfire and shared different ways to keep our heart feeling GREAT!
  1. Eat lots of fiber. We know from the scrolls we found in the Grains section that whole wheat foods like brown rice, whole wheat pasta and whole grains bread are great sources of fiber. We also know that fresh fruits and vegetables give us lots of fiber. Don’t forget tasty beans!
  2. Eat healthy fats. We haven’t really explored the yellow part of the pyramid yet but we do know that some foods have healthy oils that our body needs. Fish, peanut butter, olive oil and nuts have healthy oils that our bodies need.
  3. Try to eat less fat that comes from meats because they aren’t really good for our heart. Lean meats are better for your heart. You can usually see the fat on red meats. The white meat from chicken and turkey have less fat. And if you take off the skin that will really lower the fat. Some meats are really high in fat like sausage and hot dogs so we should try to eat smaller amounts of those foods and less often.
  4. Finally, be active every day. Remember, your heart is a muscle and needs to be exercise.

This Valentine’s Day give lots of love to your heart by taking good care of it.
Happy Valentines’ Day from all the Explorers! See you next month.

Your body needs at least 60 minutes of exercise every day!
It is healthier to eat potatoes with their skins on!

Find your resting heart rate. After a good night sleep and before you get out of bed, find your pulse. Ask mom or day to help you if you can’t locate it. Usually, you can find it placing two fingers on your neck near your chin. Watch the clock as you count up your beat for one entire minute. Or if you are good at math, count up your beats for 15 seconds and multiply that by 4.
