World Series parade has junk food characters - no fruits and vegetables

Posted on Nov 10, 2010 by Maggie LaBarbera

It was one week ago today when I stood on Market Street with thousands and thousands of other San Francisco Giants fans and celebrated the World Series victory that was indescribable!  I was born and raised in San Francisco so this is an event that we had been waiting for so long!

But, there was one moment, when I was a little taken back.  The parade was passing with all different floats of participants, Giant alumni and supportive organizations driving by.  There was one food float in the parade.  And guess what it was.

A float with three junk food characters waving at all the kids.  Where was the fruits and veggies?  This is the reason kids naturally associate fun and memorable events with junk food.  They have the marketing muscle to be featured as the only food items in a World Series Parade.

Just imagine what kids would think if there were characters promoting healthy foods in big events, on TV, in games...everywhere fun that kids interacted with.  Studies show that characters make foods more enticing to kids.  I guess that is why the high-fat, high-sugar food industry spends 14% of their kids' marketing dollars in cross promotions that use characters to promote their foods.

But parents, you are still the biggest advertisement that kids see every day.  And we are here to help you show children that eating healthy foods is very fun!  Together we can promote healthy eating and healthy choices in a fun and positive way to children.
