Healthy eating and the ballpark - World Series can be a healthy event for kids

Posted on Oct 27, 2010 by Maggie LaBarbera

It's World Series Time and yes, I am from San Francisco.  So this is going to be a very exciting World Series for me and the Giant fans.

The ballpark, really most sporting events, many kids and parents think of hot dogs, garlic fries, soda, cotton candy and more food!  As we bring kids to the ballpark, hockey games, basketball games and other arena sports, does that mean we throw all nutrition sense out the window?  Can you go to a sporting arena and give the kids some healthy foods?  Great questions.

Here are some helpful tips to help your kids balance some ballpark/arena food with some healthy foods.

  • A little planning goes a long way.  Check out the concession food options before you get there.  You can often get this online.
  • Talk the kids about their food options so they know ahead of time.  It is all about balance.
  • Have the kids choose one of their favorite food items and one healthy favorite food item.  Most sporting events are now offering healthier options.
You can usually find:
  • nuts (these are very healthy!)
  • fruit cups
  • fresh soft pretzels
  • salad
  • milk
  • wrap sandwiches
  • hummus and veggie dip
  • garden burgers
Food is only one small part of the experience.  Cheering for your team and being together as a family are very fun and important parts of the overall experience.

On that note, the World Series starts tonight.  Goooooooo Giants!
